Russia’s southern rivers face dangerous ice shifts as winter arrives

Rivers in Russia’s far south are experiencing unstable ice conditions as winter sets in. Ice jams, drifting slush, and shifting ice flows have created hazards for boaters. Authorities have issued updated safety rules to prevent accidents during the freeze-up period.

The Vychegda, Mezen, and Pechora river basins now have full or partial ice cover. Water temperatures in the Vychegda near Syktyvkar remain just above freezing at +0.6°C. Stable ice formation is forecasted on certain rivers between December 6 and 10, but until then, conditions stay unpredictable.

The combination of unstable ice and strict regulations aims to reduce risks during the transition to winter. Authorities urge all water users to follow the updated guidelines. Violations could lead to penalties or increased danger on partially frozen rivers.
