Russia's pulse exports skyrocket as global demand for plant proteins grows

Russia's pulse exports surged in 2023, with shipments more than doubling in volume and value. Over 3.2 million tons of pulses were sent abroad in the first eleven months of the year, driven by strong demand from key markets. Peas made up the largest share, while chickpeas and lentils also saw significant growth. Russia exported nearly 2.5 million tons of peas between January and November 2023—a 2.5-fold increase from the previous year. China became the top buyer, importing over 915,000 tons, as demand for pea protein rose across Asia. Fitness trends and a shift toward low-fat, plant-based foods boosted the market, helping Russia expand its agricultural trade with China.

Chickpea shipments also climbed, reaching 489,000 tons—a 2.3-fold rise compared to 2022. Turkey led imports, purchasing 233,000 tons. Lentil exports grew even faster, jumping 2.9 times to 268,000 tons.

The overall pulse harvest in 2023 rose by 29%, nearing 6 million tons. This increase supported higher export volumes, with total pulse shipments up 2.5 times year-on-year. In value terms, exports doubled, reflecting both greater quantities and stronger market prices. Russia's pulse trade has expanded rapidly, with peas, chickpeas, and lentils all seeing major export growth. The rise in demand, particularly from China and Turkey, has strengthened agricultural ties and boosted production. The trend highlights shifting global preferences toward plant-based proteins and healthier food options.
