Russia's President Putin sees the United Arab Emirates as a fitting location for a meeting with the former U.S. President, Trump.
The long-awaited meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump took place on August 15, 2025, marking their first encounter as sitting presidents since 2019. The summit, held at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, primarily focused on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and potential peace terms.
The event began with both leaders arriving by aircraft, walking down a red carpet flanked by F-22 fighters, and engaging in talks that lasted over two hours, followed by a joint press conference. This summit was significant as it was the first meeting on U.S. soil between presidents of Russia and the United States since 2007.
Kremlin Foreign Policy Advisor Yury Ushakov announced the summit, mentioning that the preparations were business-focused and constructive. Ushakov also stated that common steps toward resolving the Ukraine crisis were discussed in a meeting with U.S. President Trump's Middle East Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
In the wake of the summit announcement, the Russian ruble gained 0.79 percent against the dollar, falling to 79.45 rubles per USD. The Moscow Stock Exchange, in turn, rose 4.5 percent, with the MOEX index climbing above 2,888 points.
While Putin expressed openness to meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, he stated that certain conditions need to be met first. Ushakov proposed a trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy, but Moscow currently focuses on bilateral summit preparations.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan recently spoke by phone with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov regarding the latest situation regarding Russia-Ukraine negotiations. Türkiye has urged a just and lasting peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict based on Kyiv's territorial integrity.
As the summit concluded, Trump signaled a potential summit with both Russian and Ukrainian leaders, although no specific details have been provided regarding the topics to be discussed or the venue for future meetings. The venue for the Putin-Trump meeting was decided and will be announced shortly.
