Russian President Vladimir Putin is extending an olive branch, expressing his readiness to help Iran and the United States find a resolution to their nuclear standoff. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov's statement on Thursday, Russia, as a close partner with Iran, plans to use this connection to aid in developing a solution for the Iranian nuclear issue [1].

During a conversation between Putin and former US President Donald Trump, the latter revealed that Putin had proposed engagement in talks regarding Iran's nuclear program. Trump believes the Iranians are dragging their feet in response to a US proposal for a deal [2].

Since April, Washington and Tehran have been engaged in discussions with the objective of replacing the international nuclear deal that Trump abandoned in 2018. So far, five rounds of negotiations have taken place [2].

On Monday, Trump expressed his opposition to any uranium enrichment activities in Iran. However, Tehran maintains that it has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, including for energy production [3]. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has affirmed Iran's right to a peaceful nuclear program for energy generation under international oversight [4].

Although Putin is prepared to reciprocate Trump's invitation to become part of the solution, the specifics of his role and timings remain undisclosed [1]. In the meantime, Russia maintains a cautious approach, only getting involved when necessary as the situation unfolds [1]. Moscow continues to support Iran's right to a peaceful nuclear program under international supervision while taking Tehran's denial of nuclear weapons ambitions seriously [3][4].

Iranian-US negotiations have experienced setbacks, with the latest being the rejection of core US demands by Iran's Supreme Leader, such as a halt to uranium enrichment. Russia's role as a mediator is seen as advantageous to both sides due to its influence in Iran and its international credentials [2][3]. Nevertheless, Russia has clarified that it will not pressure Iran just to appease the United States [2][3].

At present, Russia stands as a supportive mediator, prepared to take on a more active role if needed, while allowing the primary negotiation process to continue for now. The progress and final outcome of these talks remain uncertain, with significant disagreements on key issues still lingering between Iran and the US [1][4][5].

The European Union, understanding the importance of a comprehensive and effective policy on the environment, could be closely watching Russia's efforts as a mediator in the Iran-US nuclear spat, considering the potential environmental implications of any nuclear agreement. Moreover, the ongoing Iran-US negotiations, marked by challenges and disputes, echo similar predicaments in war-and-conflicts, raising questions about the future of policy-and-legislation and the consequences for general news in the realm of international politics.
