"Step in the Ring" Putin to mediate in the heated Iran-US nuclear showdown

Russia's President, Putin, expresses interest in brokering talks between Iran and the United States regarding their nuclear standoff.

In a surprising turn of events, Russian President Vladimir Putin has offered to step in as a mediator in the contentious nuclear standoff between Iran and the United States. This comes after stalled negotiations for a new nuclear agreement.

President Putin's proposal follows a phone conversation with his American counterpart, Donald Trump. The Kremlin spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, confirmed Putin's intent to use Russia's close partnership with Iran to aid in resolving the Iranian nuclear issue.

Trump himself announced after the call that Putin was prepared to join the discussions regarding Iran's nuclear program. The US President has accused Iran of dragging their feet in responding to a US proposal for a new nuclear agreement.

Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have been ongoing since April, aiming to replace the 2018 international nuclear deal that Trump abandoned during his first term. Five rounds of talks have taken place thus far.

In a recent statement, Trump declared that no uranium enrichment should take place in Iran. In contrast, Iran asserts its right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes, particularly for energy generation. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has maintained that Iran has the right to a peaceful nuclear program for energy production.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has asserted that the US has no say in Iran's uranium enrichment. This declaration comes amidst Russia's ongoing military invasion of Ukraine, causing a strengthening of Russian-Iranian military cooperation.
