Russia's Nizhny Novgorod braces for floods and wildfires in emergency drills
Emergency drills were recently held in Russia's Nizhny Novgorod region to prepare for spring flooding and wildfires. Power engineers from Nizhnovenergo joined forces with EMERCOM teams to test their response in high-risk areas. The exercises covered multiple districts, including Bor, Pervomaysk, and Dzerzhinsk.
The first phase of the drills focused on flooding risks along the Vyksunka, Zheleznitsa, and Teshsha rivers. A simulated power outage during the exercise left 2,028 residents without electricity. Teams worked to restore supply quickly while protecting critical infrastructure from water damage.
The second phase shifted to wildfire response, with a mock blaze spreading across 30 hectares in the Bogorodsk forestry. Participants practised coordinated efforts to contain the fire and prevent further spread. Power engineers and emergency responders demonstrated their ability to handle both flooding and fire scenarios under pressure. Throughout the drills, teams emphasised the resilience of the power grid and the importance of rapid recovery. Their performance highlighted essential skills, expertise, and smooth cooperation between different services.
The exercises confirmed that Nizhny Novgorod's emergency and energy teams are prepared for seasonal threats. Both flooding and wildfire response strategies were tested in realistic conditions. Officials noted the drills as a key step in safeguarding local communities and infrastructure.
