MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin is offering Ukraine a fresh opportunity for peace talks, this time in Istanbul.
Setting the stage for potential negotiations beginning May 15th, Putin shared his intention to discuss peace pathways with Ukrainian authorities via a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, scheduled for Monday.
Speaking at a news conference in Moscow, Putin expressed his willingness to negotiate without preconditions, emphasizing the necessity of ending the current conflict that has gripped the region. He expressed hope that those genuinely seeking peace would support this initiative.
When asked about the potential for a new ceasefire, Putin suggested that such an agreement could be achieved during the Istanbul talks.
Looking back, Russia and Ukraine engaged in peace negotiations in Istanbul in March 2022, resulting in a draft peace agreement. However, Ukraine subsequently withdrew from the peace process unilaterally.
The proposed peace talks come at a time of tension between Russia and Ukraine, with both countries grappling with the aftermath of the ongoing conflict. The international community, especially the United States, has been urging a swift resolution to the war, with President Trump expressing his desire for a ceasefire[2].
