Russia's Largest Conscription in Nearly a Decade to Begin This Autumn
Russia is set to hold its largest conscription drive in nearly a decade, with President Vladimir Putin ordering the call-up of 135,000 men for routine military service this autumn. This is the biggest autumn conscription since 2016.
The conscription, scheduled from October 1 to December 31, 2024, will see men aged between 18 and 30 drafted into service. This age group is typically called up twice a year, in the spring and autumn, with more men usually conscripted in the spring to coincide with school and college graduations.
The 2024 conscription is expected to be the largest total call-up since 2016, with 160,000 men called up in the spring. Conscripts are expected to serve for a year at a military base inside Russia, not in Ukraine, although some reports suggest otherwise. It is important to note that this conscription is unrelated to mobilization, which is used for wartime drafting.
Putin's order for the expanded military, which will reach 1.5 million active soldiers by 2024, and the increased conscription drives in recent years reflect Russia's ongoing military expansion. This autumn's conscription, the largest in nearly a decade, is a significant step in this process.
