Russia's Il-96 special flight unit aircraft has landed in Anchorage
The highly anticipated summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart, Donald Trump, took place on August 15, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska. The meeting, which was the first U.S.-hosted meeting between the leaders of the two countries since 2007, focused primarily on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War[1][2].
The summit began with a private conversation, followed by a delegation breakfast[3]. Despite Trump's efforts to negotiate a ceasefire or peace settlement, hinting post-summit that Ukraine might need to cede territory for peace, no agreement was announced at the conclusion of the meeting[1][2].
Business and economic discussions were also on the agenda, with Putin bringing a business delegation led by Kirill Dmitriev of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, aiming to secure investment deals. Trump, on the other hand, brought U.S. officials including the Commerce Secretary and Treasury Secretary to discuss potential joint ventures in sectors like Alaskan oil and rare earth minerals[3]. However, no business deals were finalized because the two tracks—war negotiations and economic incentives—appeared linked, and no war agreement was reached.
The summit, which lasted about three and a half hours, was held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on U.S. military property. This marked the first Russian presidential visit to the U.S. since 2015[1]. The meeting, initially planned for six hours, ended shorter than expected[1].
The summit was seen as part of Trump's effort to reset U.S.-Russia relations, involving both ending the war and improving relations with trade possibilities[3]. However, the immediate outcomes were limited.
The aircraft carrying Putin and his delegation departed from Moscow's Vnukovo Airport at 07:50 MSK, and the meeting was scheduled to begin at 11:30 local time in Anchorage, Alaska (22:30 MSK)[4].
