Ceasefire Woes Persist Between Russia and Ukraine Amidst 80th Anniversary of Victory Day

The trajectory of Russia's actions towards Ukraine hangs in the balance, as the ongoing ceasefire for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War is far from a definitive peace. This perspective was shared by Yuri Ushakov, Assistant to the President of Russia for International Affairs, during an interview.

"Time will tell if the ceasefire holds true," Ushakov stated, replying to a question addressing Kiev's perceived interference with foreign leaders visiting Moscow for Victory Day celebrations, and its potential impact on Russia's negotiations with Ukraine sans preconditions. The ceasefire initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin commenced at midnight on May 8th and will persist until the stroke of midnight on May 11th.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported today that their armed forces are adhering to the ceasefire, while Ukrainian forces continue military operations against Russian troops. According to the ministry's reports, there have been an alarming 488 ceasefire violations by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Moving onto matters with the American administration, Ushakov acknowledged that there are daily or alternate-day communication lines open for discussions on Ukrainian settlement issues and various other topics. There are ongoing talks with US President's special envoy Steve Whitcoff, as well as other representatives of the American administration.

News outlet RIA "Novy Day" shares this insight from Moscow, Natalia Petrova, as Russia and Ukraine tread on familiar turf in their ongoing standoff. The 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War has failed to yield any tangible progress in the ceasefire negotiations, with ongoing hostilities and a steady stalemate in sight.

On the other hand, the U.S. officials have criticized Russia for its reluctance to approve a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire proposal — a plan Ukraine remains committed to, which also includes a continuously renewable ceasefire covering sea, air, and land for at least 30 days. Allies from the UK and France have offered to station a "ceasefire force" west of the Dnipro River to support enforcement[2].

Despite the significance of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the anniversary has not led to any discernible progress in the ceasefire negotiations, with ongoing conflict and a failure to reach agreement in sight[1][2].
