Russia's Foreign Minister Lavrov indicates readiness for negotiations and potential compromises with Ukraine.
Russia has taken a significant step in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine by annexing four Ukrainian regions – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia – in the autumn of 2022, half a year after the start of the war. The annexations were carried out under the supervision of Russian military personnel.
Despite the annexation, Ukraine has not given up its stance. The country has retreated from its initial demand for the withdrawal of Russian troops behind its borders, but it remains firm in not recognizing the Russian annexation of these territories. Ukraine considers these annexations illegal and has rejected any negotiations under conditions that would imply acceptance of Russian control over these territories.
Moscow, on the other hand, continues to insist on its maximalist demands, including the cession of these four territories. Vladimir Putin had previously demanded that Ukraine abandon its NATO aspirations and cede these territories to end the war.
In an attempt to legitimize the annexation, Russia held so-called popular votes in parts of the territories that it has not yet fully captured. However, these votes are not recognized internationally.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to be a source of concern for the international community. Both sides have shown no signs of reaching a peaceful resolution, and the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia has further complicated the situation. The international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict and respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
