Ukraine-Crimea Debunked: Mejlis Leader Slams Trump's False Claims

Hey there! Let's talk about some heated politics amidst the chilling tension between Ukraine and Russia. Sasha Vakulina from our team took a dive into the ongoing feud, and here's what came up.

Donald Trump, ex-POTUS, claimed that Ukraine didn't fights for Crimea a decade ago when it was "gifted" to Russia without causing a stir. But, the Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, Refat Chubarov, says otherwise. He told our team that these comments are both disrespectful and false.

When Russia decided to muscle in on Crimea in 2014, Ukraine's foreign partners weren't asking for resistance from Crimean officials. Instead, they encouraged caution, fearing the chaos that'd ensue, especially among the Crimean Tatars. Chubarov recalls the ambassadors saying things like, "We hope that the Crimean Tatars won't provoke the Russian military, or else there would be pogroms, and we wouldn't be able to help the civilians."

Fast-forward to 2021, and Chubarov stands convicted on fabricated charges. He was banned and sentenced to six years in prison for supposedly inciting violence and threatening Russia's integrity. Chubarov couldn't help but call out the irony. He told our team, "Critics should remember the cowardice of their own states, which, as guararantors of Ukraine's security under the Budapest Memorandum, failed to stop Russia's aggression. It wasn't just Ukraine; it was the world that failed to stand up against a nuclear power, a permanent UN Security Council member."

Though Trump's assertion that Crimea was "gifted" to Russia without a shot fired is false, Chubarov neither denies the killing of Ukrainian soldiers in the initial occupation days nor the subsequent abductions and unexplained disappearances of Crimean Tatars' youth. He sees Trump's words as "great disrespect" for those who've lost their lives and the "ignorance of the events that transpired."

Russia's intentions have remained clear, with no signs of backing down. Chubarov stated, "Russia will hold onto Crimea because Putin needs it to appease the people, given that Russia has achieved nothing in over three years."

The Crimean Tatar Mejlis continues to stand firm, rejecting any decision on Crimea without the involvement of Ukraine and the Crimean Tatars. Chubarov warned that any official recognition of Crimea by the US as Russian territory could strengthen Putin's regime and jeopardize the cause of peace.
