Russia's Airbase and Military Facility Under Attack by Ukraine's Security Forces

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian drone attacks have targeted key Russian military and industrial sites, according to reports from early August 2025. The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) has claimed responsibility for these attacks, which have caused explosions and fires at several locations.

The SSU reported successful strikes on the Shahed drone storage airbase in Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Elektropribor military plant in Penza. The airbase, which stores and launches Shahed attack drones, experienced a fire, though the exact nature of the damage is not specified in the report. The Elektropribor plant, a crucial part of the Russian defense industry, produces digital network equipment for military command systems and devices for aviation, armored vehicles, ships, and spacecraft. However, the location of the Penza plant remains unspecified.

These attacks are part of a broader wave of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian infrastructure, including oil refineries in Ryazan, Novokuibyshevsk (Samara region), and a fuel depot in Voronezh. The Ukrainian military has characterised these actions as responses to recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities. Videos shared on social media show fires and explosions after the strikes.

Additional impacts include confirmed fires at the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery, air defence activity across several Russian regions, and at least one civilian killed by falling debris from a drone intercepted during these attacks. Regional authorities have confirmed emergency responses, but often did not release detailed official statements about the attacks.

Russia has responded with threats, with the Deputy Head of Russia's Security Council stating that Russia is already at war with NATO. Moreover, the Belarusian Defence Minister has claimed that "112,000 Ukrainian troops" are deployed near the Belarusian border, threatening to destroy NATO aircraft. Russia has also threatened to strike Poland in response to the situation.

These developments underscore the increasing tensions between Ukraine and Russia and the potential for further escalation. As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for all parties to exercise restraint and seek diplomatic solutions to resolve the conflict.
