Russia’s 2024 grain harvest falls short of last year’s record highs

Russia’s grain harvest has reached 146.3 million tons so far this year. The figure falls short of last year’s record, when farmers collected 155 million tons by the same date.

By the end of the 2023 season, the country had gathered 157.7 million tons—the highest on record. This year’s net grain harvest is now forecast at 140 million tons, including 93 million tons of wheat.

Farmers have threshed grain and legume crops from 46.3 million hectares. The average yield stands at 31.6 centners per hectare. Wheat alone accounts for 94.7 million tons, harvested from 29 million hectares at 32.6 centners per hectare.

Barley production has dropped compared to last year. This season, 22 million tons were gathered from 7.8 million hectares, down from 24.5 million tons in 2023.

Winter crop sowing is also moving faster than last year. So far, 18.9 million hectares have been planted, putting the season ahead of schedule.

The current harvest remains below last year’s record levels. Wheat yields have stayed strong, but barley output has declined. With winter sowing progressing quickly, farmers continue to work toward the forecasted 140 million-ton total.
