Russia’s 1 GW Kankunskaya Dam to Power Industry and Boost Energy Exports

Russia's Elga company is pushing forward with the construction of the 1 GW Kankunskaya hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in the Southern Yakutia region. The project, originally planned for the Timpton River, is now set for the Kankun River and is part of Russia's long-term energy strategy. It promises to drive integrated development in the region, including the Aldan industrial cluster.

The Kankunskaya HPP, with its 1 GW capacity, will serve multiple purposes. It will provide the necessary power for a mining and metallurgical complex producing hot-briquetted iron, a mineral fertilizer plant, and facilities producing liquefied natural gas (LNG), ammonia, and ammonium nitrate. This will significantly boost the region's industrial output.

In addition, the HPP will enable the export of additional energy resources, potentially even to China, via ultra-high-voltage transmission lines. This could open up new markets and revenue streams for Russia's energy sector.

The Kankunskaya HPP project, driven by Elga, is set to transform the energy landscape of Southern Yakutia. By powering key industrial facilities and facilitating energy exports, it promises to stimulate economic growth and development in the region.
