Russians place wagers on comprehensive penetration, asserts Ukrainian commander
In the heart of the Donetsk Oblast, the city of Pokrovsk has become a focal point of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russian forces.
An elderly man in Samara was tragically killed when debris from a drone struck a house, highlighting the far-reaching effects of the conflict. Meanwhile, in Penza, a woman was killed, and two others were injured in a drone attack on an enterprise's premises. Three people have lost their lives in Ukrainian drone attacks in several Russian regions.
Russian forces have been making progress in the northeast of Pokrovsk last week, attempting to encircle the city and cut off its logistics routes and ground connections. Their tactics involve small fireteams of two or three soldiers, infiltrating Ukrainian defenses gradually to accumulate forces at concentration points for further attacks. They are also trying to advance from surrounding areas, such as Kotlyne-Udachne, to maneuver around Pokrovsk from the west and northwest.
Ukrainian forces, however, are determined to block these infiltration attempts. They have maintained control of key positions such as northwestern Zapovidne and the area southwest of Pokrovsk called Leontovychi, effectively preventing Russian breakthroughs in urban districts. Ukrainian commanders emphasize holding off advances through coordinated resistance despite the overwhelming number of Russian attackers, utilizing knowledge of the local terrain and reinforced positions to deny Russian forces enveloping maneuvers.
The battle near Pokrovsk is marked by Russian small-unit infiltration and encirclement attempts versus Ukrainian defensive resilience focused on preventing urban penetration and maintaining supply lines. The city remains a critical objective for Russian forces due to its strategic location in central Donetsk Oblast, making the fighting there among the fiercest on the front lines as of mid-2025.
Elsewhere, the Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reports that Russian troops are attempting to break through the defense lines of Pokrovsk using a "total infiltration" tactic. In a significant development, the USA and NATO are reportedly working on a new model for delivering US weapons to Ukraine, with NATO countries funding the purchases or transfers.
The conflict has claimed a heavy toll on both sides. The Ukrainian General Staff reports that in the past 24 hours, 1010 Russian casualties were inflicted. One year after the prisoner exchange with Russia, some of the freed prisoners are calling for more action to be taken for the remaining political prisoners.
The fighting has also had repercussions beyond the battlefield. Lithuania's military has located an unmanned aerial vehicle that is believed to have entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus. A section of Russia's Central Asian gas pipeline has been damaged by explosions, disrupting operations in the Volgograd region.
In a move that escalated tensions, US President Donald Trump announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines in response to remarks by Dmitri Medvedev. Ukraine's Anti-Corruption Bureau and Special Prosecutor's Office have detained a Ukrainian MP, several heads of local authorities, and a National Guard member for corruption related to the procurement of drones and electronic warfare equipment.
Amidst this turmoil, there are signs of diplomatic maneuvering. US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, believes that President Donald Trump still has leverage to diplomatically end the war in Ukraine. He plans to impose harsh sanctions against Russia and countries doing business with Russia if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire. However, UK Defense Minister David Lammy expects that President Putin has no intention of leading peace negotiations.
This article provides a snapshot of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, focusing on the battle for Pokrovsk and recent developments. The situation remains fluid, with both sides displaying resilience and determination. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this protracted conflict.
