Russians Dream Big: Average Income Target Over Twice National Average
Russians have set their sights high for happiness, with an average monthly income target of 227,000 rubles, over twice the national average. This aspiration is influenced by desires for better living conditions, social status, and financial security. Meanwhile, wages have been on the rise, with 24 industries surpassing 150,000 rubles in August 2025.
The average salary in Russia reached 92,900 rubles in August 2025, a significant increase from 82,200 rubles in the same month last year. Notably, software developers and passenger air transport workers joined the elite group earning over 200,000 rubles. The highest earnings were seen in gas extraction at 327,600 rubles, software publishing at 216,700 rubles, and pesticide and agrochemical production at 215,800 rubles.
In August 2025, wages in sectors like maritime freight, finance, insurance, fishing, pipeline transport, and oil extraction ranged from 180,000 to 200,000 rubles. This marks a significant expansion from 2024, when only 12 sectors exceeded 150,000 rubles. The gap between aspirations and reality is evident, with residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg aiming for 695,000 rubles, while those in smaller towns target around 194,000 rubles.
The Russian economy has seen wage growth, with more industries surpassing the 150,000 ruble mark. However, Russians' happiness income target of 227,000 rubles remains elusive for many, especially in smaller towns. As the national average salary continues to rise, the gap between aspirations and reality may narrow, but for now, it persists.
