Russo-Ukrainian Struggle Over Bachmut Unfolds

On the Ukrainian warfront, an alarming trend emerges: since winter's onset, Ukrainian defenders have faced relentless pressure at multiple strategic locations. This pressure culminates at Bachmut, where Russian troops have achieved remarkable successes.

Eastern Ukraine witnesses an onslaught of challenges: just as the significant clash of Avdiivka unfolds, Ukrainian troops find themselves battling Russian assaults at numerous points along the extensive 1000-kilometer-long frontline.

Over the past few days, Russian soldiers have made substantial territorial advances near Bachmut. The Ukrainian forces have lost the suburbs of Bachmut, including Khromowe, and seemingly relinquished the hard-won advance towards Chassiv Yar as well.

In a summary of the situation amidst winter's opening, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky underscores the ferocity of the battles at numerous positions along the frontline. Mariinka, Avdiivka, and Bakhmut are the most challenging spots, with Ukrainian troops battling waves upon waves of assaults since winter began. Mariinka remains a shattered cityscape, whereas in Avdiivka, Ukrainian forces have thus far prevented encirclement. The critical Ukrainian positions in Bakhmut are at risk.

Ukrainian soldiers have so far withstood these relentless attacks. Russian troops target the well-fortified positions along the western and southwestern ridges, which house remnants of an urban area that once boasted a population of around 75,000. Situated on the border of the Donbass, Bakhmut holds historical significance as a powerful symbol of Ukrainian resolve.

The Russian conquest of Bakhmut was officially proclaimed only in May 2023, marking the culmination of months of exorbitantly costly attacks. Despite decimating the urban area, Russian troops managed to drive back Ukrainian forces from its ruins. This conquest yielded little strategic value, as it required substantial military resources, including a considerable portion of the Wagner mercenary troops.

However, Ukrainian forces counterattacked against Bachmut after the anticipated initiatory counteroffensive in the summer. They reclaimed several suburbs in the southwest region, notably the particularly contentious village of Klishchiivka. Nevertheless, Ukrainian advances were eventually stalled on this front.

Ukraine failed to score a decisive victory by breaching the Russian lines at Bachmut. Their progress here reached just four kilometers from the city center. The railroad embankment now marks the most recent front line, with the Bachmutka River's flat, unprotected lowlands lying behind it. The question now is how long Ukrainian troops in Klishchiivka can continue holding out. Local drone footage reveals intense clashes north of the village, with Russian shock troops advancing from a forested strip to the southwest. If this ridge falls, it seems probable that Ukrainian forces will need to abandon Klishchiivka temporarily.

Looking ahead, the eastern Ukrainian regions are bracing for further challenges, despite Ukrainian resistance in Avdiivka. The battle over Bachmut stands as one of the war's most gruesome and bloody engagements, drawing parallels with major historical conflicts like Verdun and Stalingrad, as Ukraine prepares for an imminent counteroffensive across the front lines.
