Russian warplanes encroach upon Estonia's airspace, as reported by the NATO-allied nation.
In a series of escalating incidents, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonia's airspace for a total of 12 minutes on Friday, marking the third such incident in recent days. This latest violation has sparked concern and condemnation from European Union (EU) officials, who view it as a test of the West's resolve in the face of Russian aggression.
Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, described the incident as an 'extremely dangerous provocation.' She further suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin is deliberately testing the West's resolve, seeking to escalate tensions in the region.
Estonia's Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, addressed the chargé d'affaires of the Russian embassy in Estonia by summoning him and delivering a formal protest note against Russia's airspace violations. Tsahkna described the violation as 'unprecedentedly brazen.'
This is the fourth time Estonia's airspace has been violated by Russia this year. In May, Tallinn stated that Moscow sent a fighter jet into NATO airspace over the Baltic Sea during an attempt to stop a Russian-bound oil tanker, which was thought to be part of a 'shadow fleet' defying Western sanctions on Moscow.
The repeated violations of EU airspace have raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region. In response, Kallas has pledged to continue supporting member states in strengthening their defenses with European resources. She also warned against showing weakness in response to these provocations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong and united front.
Just over a week ago, more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, further adding to the sense of unease in Europe. The incident in Estonia serves as a test of the West's resolve in the face of Russian aggression, and highlights the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among European nations.
As the situation continues to develop, it is clear that the West must remain united in its response to Russian aggression, and continue to support its allies in strengthening their defenses. The repeated violations of EU airspace are a reminder that the threat of Russian aggression remains a real and present danger, and that the West must remain vigilant in the face of these challenges.
