In the ongoing skirmishes in eastern Ukraine, Russian forces have made substantial progress, seizing territories near Avdiivka. According to Ukrainian military experts, Ukrainian units have been forced to retreat from specific areas, including sections of the industrial region south-east of the city, due to the Russian offensive.
Recent advances in Avdiivka aren't new. As early as late January 2024, Russian forces began an offensive on the Bakhmut front, gradually moving westward towards Chasiv Yar. Over the subsequent months, they captured Lastochkyne, Stepove, Sieverne, and more, pushing Ukrainian forces back. By June 2024, Russian forces had captured Heorhiivka and Novooleksandrivka, potentially disrupting Ukrainian supply lines.
Russian strategy, which involves tactical envelopment and extensive use of infantry-dominated assaults, appears to be contributing to these territorial gains. Russian forces employ kamikaze drones, electronic warfare, and limited armored vehicle support, effectively navigating urban and rural areas.
These advances have led to an intensified conflict, with clashes erupting near Avdiivka, Chasiv Yar, and Toretsk. The capture of Ocheretyne and surrounding areas has also created a strategic salient, potentially threatening Ukrainian positions on Donetsk's northern and eastern flanks.
However, these gains have also presented challenges for Ukrainian forces. The lack of promised fortifications in critical areas like Novohrodivka highlights the hardships faced by Ukrainian troops in defending against Russian advances. Plus, continued advances imply a sustained and aggressive military campaign from Russian forces, which could have lasting consequences for the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
