Russian soil struck: Fatality in Ukrainian assault on Saratov
In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukrainian drones have been targeting Russian energy infrastructure, causing disruptions to industrial facilities in the Saratov region.
The latest attack, on August 10, 2025, targeted an oil refinery in Saratov, causing a major fire and explosions. According to Russian reports, one person was killed in the incident. The Saratov refinery, producing about 4 million tons of gasoline and diesel annually, was directly affected, leading to a suspension of some of its operations.
This attack was part of a broader wave of drone strikes hitting 13 Russian regions as well as annexed Crimea over the weekend. Other Rosneft refineries such as Ryazan and Novokuibyshevsk also faced significant damage and operational shutdowns following drone strikes in early August 2025.
Ukraine's strategy appears to be a deliberate effort to disrupt Russian fuel supplies and logistics, pushing strikes deeper into Russian territory beyond previous frontline and western Russian targets. The drone campaign reflects ongoing military and strategic pressure by Ukraine on Russian assets within Russian territory itself.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the path to peace for Ukraine should be determined jointly and only jointly with Ukraine. He warns that the absence of "true peace" could give Russia the opportunity to launch another invasion.
Zelenskyy has coordinated with representatives of Britain, the USA, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Poland at a meeting in Britain. Keir Starmer, the British Prime Minister, and Emmanuel Macron, the French President, have welcomed US President Donald Trump's efforts to end the Ukraine war and reaffirmed their unwavering support for Zelenskyy.
However, Russia's air defense has reportedly shot down 121 Ukrainian drones overnight, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. Russian leader Vladimir Putin has changed his strategy to discuss the redistribution of land with Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, as per a report by the "New York Times".
Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, has expressed the war-weariness of the people of Ukraine and called for negotiations with Russia. He emphasized the need for a "diplomatic solution" with Russia, where territorial concessions were not ruled out.
The joint statement from France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Britain, Finland, and the EU Commission upholds the principle that international borders should not be changed by force and welcomes Trump's work to end the killing in Ukraine. The current status is that the conflict continues, with both sides showing no signs of backing down.
