It's making waves in the sports world again! Elena Vyalbe, President of the Russian Skiing Federation (FMS), isn't pleased with five-time Olympic champion Johannes Klæbo's thoughts on the potential comeback of Russian athletes to international competition. Vyalbe had a frank conversation with "Sport-Express" about this.

Klæbo had expressed his reservations, considering the return of Russians under the International Ski Federation (FIS) as misguided. Vyalbe, however, dismisses Klæbo's comments, stating, "It's his job to ski, not to wax philosophical."

Worth mentioning, RBC Sport reports that Vyalbe is quite content enjoying medal distribution without Russian competitors. "Besides, their main job is to rake in cash. When there's an opportunity to score more, and with less hassle, what complaints can there be? It's all logical," she adds.

As of March 2022, the International Biathlon Union (IBU), in tandem with FIS, has imposed a ban on all Russian and Belarusian athletes and staff from international competitions. This move mirrors sanctions in response to the invasion of Ukraine, hitting a range of international sports organizations[1].

Recent discussions propose the possibility of Russian and Belarusian athletes competing as Independent Neutral Athletes (AIN), even sans national representation[2]. Many Russian sports figures champion this return as a strategic play to reassert national presence on the global sports stage[4]. However, Russian athletes themselves have voiced their dissatisfaction with the conditions for their return, considering them unfair[4].

While the ban remains in place for now, conversations continue regarding potential avenues that would enable Russian and Belarusian athletes to partake in international competitions under a neutral flag. Stay tuned to "RBC Sport" channel for the latest updates!
