Motorcycling Their Way Through History: Night Wolves Heads to Berlin for War Commemoration

Russian motorcycle club 'Nightwolves' embarks on travel to Berlin - Russian rock group Night Wolves set course for Berlin

The notorious Russian motorcycle club, the Night Wolves, has kicked off a journey to Berlin, aiming to honor the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This ride will conclude as they commemorate the victory on May 9th at Berlin's Treptower Park, the Soviet War Memorial. The bikers anticipate this tribute will symbolize victory over fascism and the enduring values of coexistence and international friendship.

As they departed Moscow, streets were momentarily blocked for the procession of around 200 bikers. The gang wore military attire or club vests emblazoned with the fierce wolf emblem and a flaming tail. Flags from Russia and Germany flew, while some vehicles sported the controversial "Z" symbol, associated with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Night Wolves have been vocal supporters of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Officially, the group accompanied Putin in 2014 on the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed.

Questions surrounding the Night Wolves' attendance at the Berlin commemoration persist. The club's presence in the EU, due to its stance on Ukraine, falls under sanctions.

Germany wrestles with the decision to allow Russian delegates at World War II commemorations. The Night Wolves acknowledge the debate but express an indignant attitude: "Russia has no one to ask, and Russia asks no one," said one member. "It's all irrelevant," asserted another. However, they exhibit empathy, considering the sacrifice their ancestors made as members of the Red Army during World War II, with the Soviet Union losing 27 million people in the war.

German branches of the Night Wolves have actively participated in the past, laying wreaths and carnations at a World War II memorial in Torgau on the Elbe River.

May 8, 1945, marked the German surrender, bringing an end to World War II in Europe. Since then, May 9 has been celebrated annually in Russia as "Victory Day."
