Ambassador Nechaev Honors 80 Years of Peace with a St. George's Ribbon Despite Constraints

When Russian Ambassador Sergei Nechaev commemorated the 80th anniversary of World War II's end, he flaunted the so-called St. George's Ribbon at Berlin's Soviet War Memorial, despite a general order issued by the police prohibiting this symbol and other pro-Russian flags or insignia.

The police worry that these symbols, which include the St. George ribbons, Soviet, Russian, and Belarusian flags, letters “V” and “Z” (politically charged), and military accouterments, could create security issues during Victory Day commemorations. They've clamped down on these items, especially around significant memorial sites like those in Treptow, Mitte, and Pankow, from May 8 to 9 - dates marking the end of World War II in Europe 15.

The diplomatic community and veterans of World War II's Allied powers, however, are exempt from these restrictions. Nevertheless, political tensions have led to the exclusion of official representatives from the Russian and Belarusian states from commemorative events. Ambassador Nechaev and his entourage visited nearby Nieder Schönhausen's memorial instead.

In the midst of this political game of cat and mouse, flowers were laid outside the Russian embassy in Mitte midday, bearing the message "Never again fascism - Peace with Russia". 40 registered events took place in Berlin to mark the end of the Nazi dictatorship and World War II on May 8, 1945, involving a total of 5,000 participants. Thanks to strict law enforcement, the events remained peaceful and dignified until the afternoon, a spokesperson confirmed.
