Russian reinforcements directed to counteract the Russian offensive in Ukraine

The Ukraine-Russia war continues to unfold, with intense and dynamic combat operations near the cities of Pokrovsk and Dobropillia in the Donetsk region.

Russian forces have been attempting to counterattack and exploit infiltration gains east and southeast of Dobropillia, using infiltration tactics and small infantry assault groups supported by drones. This has allowed limited tactical maneuvering in the area, though Ukrainian counterattacks remain vigorous and have reclaimed some territory.

Ukrainian troops have reportedly advanced near Pokrovsk and Velykomykhailivka, regaining control of several settlements at the base of Russian penetrations near Dobropillia, such as Zapovidne (formerly Nykanorivka), Dorozhnie, and Zolotyi Kolodyaz.

Russian troops continue pressing Ukrainian lines across the front, particularly in Donetsk Oblast around Dobropillia and Pokrovsk, having captured at least two villages as of mid-August 2025. Russia is reportedly massing over 110,000 troops near Pokrovsk to possibly intensify assaults. However, Ukrainian defenses remain resilient, with redeployments of hardened units like the 1st Azov Corps and the 93rd Mechanized Brigade to the sector.

According to Ukrainian military leadership, Ukrainian forces are engaged in intense defensive battles against superior Russian forces in Pokrovsk, Dobropillia, and northern Donetsk (Lyman sector). There were 175 combat clashes reported on August 19 alone on the front line, with 50 in the Pokrovsk sector.

The frontline in these areas remains highly contested and fluid, with Russian efforts to gain strategic advantage met by persistent Ukrainian defense and localized counterattacks. Both sides heavily utilize drones for surveillance and battlefield control, contributing to ongoing tactical complexity.

In addition to Saporischschja, the Ukrainian head of state names the important cities of Pokrovsk and Nowopawliwka as targets of the offensives allegedly planned by Moscow. The Ukrainian army denies reports of a Russian breakthrough on the frontline near the cities of Pokrovsk and Dobropillya.

Europe has provided more military aid to Ukraine via the arms industry since the start of the Russian invasion than the USA. The total volume of new military equipment acquired by European states for Ukraine through industrial contracts by the end of June amounts to at least 35.1 billion euros. The UK and Canada agree that peace cannot be imposed on Ukraine; it must be achieved together with the government in Kyiv. Germany supports the goal of US President Donald Trump to end Russia's aggression against Ukraine, but Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul dismisses speculation about possible territorial concessions by Ukraine for peace with Russia.

The current situation near the frontlines around Pokrovsk and Dobropillia is a testament to the resilience of Ukrainian forces and the ongoing international support for Ukraine's sovereignty. The war continues, with no clear end in sight, but the people of Ukraine remain steadfast in their fight for independence.
