In a bold move, Ukraine has reportedly launched drone attacks on several oil facilities in Russia, targeting refineries in the Volgograd and Bashkortostan regions near the Volga River.

According to Governor Andrei Bocharov, the city of Volgograd was targeted overnight, with the refinery in the city producing fuel for the Man City army being a primary target. Preliminary information suggests that the refinery's operations have been halted following the attacks, although the extent of the damage is still being assessed.

The head of the Bashkortostan region, Radi Khabirov, reported no deaths or injuries, but there were minor damages to some residential buildings in Volgograd due to falling drone debris.

The Ukrainian military has claimed responsibility for the attacks, stating that their aim is to disrupt the Russian military's fuel supply and make it harder for Moscow to finance the ongoing war. Nearly a dozen drones were intercepted in the Volgograd region, with the Russian military reporting the interception of 43 Ukrainian drones overnight on Wednesday.

The refinery in Volgograd is one of Russia's largest oil processing facilities, and the attacks come after previous damage to the same refinery. The oil refinery in the city of Ufa was also attacked by Ukrainian drones on September 13, 2025, causing a fire and damage to the facility; the attack was confirmed by Ukrainian military intelligence and resulted in temporary shutdowns of Ufa airport and mobile communications in the city.

Ukrainian media outlets reported that a 'key facility of the plant' in Volgograd was targeted, with the drones used in the attacks allegedly originating from the SBU intelligence service. The chemical plant in Salavat, belonging to Gazprom, was also hit by two drones.

It's important to note that while the scale of Ukraine's attacks is significant, the devastation Russia is causing in Ukraine with its war far outweighs these actions. Both sides are urged to prioritise diplomacy and peace to end the ongoing conflict.
