Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, touching upon upcoming negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a recent phone conversation, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un spoke over the phone, according to reports from both the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and Russian sources. The discussion took place in a "warm comradely atmosphere," as previously reported.

During the conversation, Kim Jong-un pledged North Korea's support for all measures taken by the Russian leadership in the future regarding the war against Ukraine. The leaders also confirmed their will to strengthen cooperation in the future.

The cooperation between Putin and Kim is characterized by a strong and growing strategic partnership, particularly marked by North Korea’s support of Russia’s military effort in Ukraine. This intensifying relationship is formally grounded in a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed in June 2024, which Russia and North Korea reaffirmed during recent contacts.

The bilateral agenda includes cooperation across multiple sectors, likely with a focus on military and diplomatic support amid ongoing geopolitical pressures related to the Ukraine conflict. Putin also shared information with Kim ahead of Putin’s August 2025 summit with then U.S. President Donald Trump, indicating coordinated messaging and mutual political backing on the international stage.

This evolving Russia-North Korea relationship is marked by a closer, mutually supportive alliance structured by shared strategic interests. North Korea has actively aided Russia in its war against Ukraine, and both leaders are promoting their partnership internationally to demonstrate defiance against Western influence.
