Title: Zelensky's Take on Trump and Potential Sanctions Against Russia

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky believes Vladimir Putin is stalling and searching for reasons to skirt new sanctions on Russia. However, there are indications that Putin won't avoid new sanctions entirely.

According to UNIAN's reports, Zelensky shared his thoughts during a meeting with journalists on June 13. When asked about Donald Trump's delay in imposing sanctions on Russia, Zelensky commented, "I truly want Trump to take strong steps. But when President Trump hasn't decided yet about imposing sanctions or not, he's giving Putin time for his own strong move. He might be afraid of shutting down the dialogue completely. But I think Putin is simply looking for an excuse to avoid sanctions. If Trump imposes tough sanctions, Putin will claim that no dialogue is possible. Just like with the Kursk operation, he'll say 'there can be no dialogue.'"

Zelensky further explained that it's similar to the alleged 'retaliatory strikes' in response to the SBU operation "Web." "If there hadn't been a massive Russian strike of nearly 500 drones a day prior, one may theoretically discuss it. He just needs a reason—a reason not to declare a ceasefire and impose sanctions. He's working in those directions. So, a lot depends on the US," Zelensky remarked.

Zelensky also expressed displeasure that the US congratulated Russia on its day. "Regardless, I find it disheartening that the United States is congratulating Russia on Russia Day. I won't hide it. It's Russia's Independence Day. They want to take away our independence. This is a war, specifically for Ukraine's independence. The war of Russia against Ukraine. Of course, I don't takes it positively when people try to take away Ukraine's independence, and our partner country - the United States - is congratulating them on such a day," Zelensky emphasized.

Further Insights:

In past cases, Donald Trump's approach to Ukraine and Russia has been less predictable and frequently overshadowed by deal-making, personal diplomacy, and controversial decisions. Sanctions on Russia may have been maintained or expanded, but there were conflicting messages regarding their enforcement. The Ukrainian President has consistently advocated for stronger international sanctions against Russia since the outbreak of full-scale war in 2022. If Trump were in office or running for office in 2025, he might take unpredictable actions—possibly direct negotiations with Putin, public criticism of NATO allies, or pressure on Ukraine to negotiate with Russia. The potential outcomes in these scenarios are uncertain, but they could lead to controversy, breakthroughs, or a mix of the two.
