Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump are scheduled to meet shortly.

The potential location for a meeting between the presidents of Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, and the United States remains undetermined. As of August 16, 2025, no trilateral summit has taken place, although President Donald Trump has expressed a willingness to set up such a summit "in fairly short order."

The third meeting of the Russian-Ukrainian delegations on July 23 did not result in any breakthroughs. The positions of Moscow and Kyiv remain "sufficiently far apart." The Ukrainian delegation proposed a meeting of the presidents by the end of August, with the presidents of Turkey and the US in attendance.

The first round of trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey took place in Istanbul on May 16, 2025. The outcome of the summit between Trump and Putin held in Alaska was described as "productive," but no concrete deal or ceasefire agreement was reached. The impasse over security guarantees and territorial issues persists, with further negotiations needed to influence the war's course.

Regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, the summit did not produce an immediate breakthrough or ceasefire. Key contentious issues such as territorial swaps and security guarantees for Ukraine remain unresolved. Zelensky, responding on the day of the meeting, highlighted continuing Russian military strikes and called for a trilateral follow-up meeting.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has imposed 25% tariffs on India, effective August 7, due to the purchase of Russian oil. Trump also announced plans for additional tariffs on Russia, threatening to impose 100% secondary tariffs if a peace agreement on Ukraine is not reached within 10 days of August 8. The Indian government has called the additional tariffs "unfair and unwarranted" and vowed to take retaliatory measures.

In other news, Trump has also mentioned the possibility of imposing new "secondary sanctions" on Russia and its trading partners. He stated that the U.S. may impose similar measures on "a couple of other countries," one of which could be China.

The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed that the Russians expressed a desire to meet with President Trump, and the president is open to meetings with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the potential trilateral summit continue to be closely watched by global leaders and citizens alike.
