Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have solidified their bond while hosting a get-together in the Russian capital. The world, currently grappling with considerable political instability and uncertainty, stands to benefit from the heightened Russia-China diplomatic alliance, as mentioned by Putin, conspicuously absent of any mention of the controversial 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In an invitation extended to Xi as the principal guest for festivities commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany, Moscow celebrated the end of World War II with a grand military parade on Red Square on May 9. While the grand display of military hardware, combined with Putin's ongoing war against Ukraine, has sparked critical reactions across the Western world, it remains a revered tradition in the Russian capital.

Though China officially maintains neutrality in the Ukrainian conflict, it draws criticism for its continued support of Russia's invasion, a stance that is likely to receive additional attention following this meeting in Moscow.

Joint Declaration on Managing Crises and Avoiding Conflict

In a joint declaration, Russia and China pledged to explore diplomatic solutions to resolve conflicts, eliminating not only their aftermath but also their root causes. According to the statement, conflicts should be addressed with dialogue, and the international community should be involved in resolving ongoing conflicts. However, it remains unclear if this commitment applies to the Russian-Ukrainian situation.

The duo is bent on strengthening their joint efforts to maintain and preserve global strategic stability, combatting common threats, and ensuring that space is not utilized for military confrontations. Experts claim that both nations, alongside the United States, are actively drafting blueprints for the military exploitation of outer space.

Fearful of sparking a new arms race, both parties expressed their opposition to instigating such a race. However, due to Russia's attack on Ukraine, tensions are escalating in Europe, potentially instigating an arms build-up among neighboring states.

Additionally, Russia and China declared their unwavering opposition to nuclear war, committing to the previously issued statement from the leaders of the five nuclear powers: Russia, China, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom dating back to January 3, 2022. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly three years ago, their threats regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons have been frequent.

China's automobile market represents a significant market for Russia. In turn, China aims to protect the respective interests of both nations against unilateralism and hegemonic behavior. Unilateralism refers to the disregard for international cooperation or adherence to established rules.

While China purchases substantial amounts of Russian resources, including gas and oil, these energy exports help fuel Putin's military expenditures. In response to the European Union's plans to cease using Russian gas by 2027, Russia's Energy Minister, Sergei Ziwiljov, asserted that they would seek alternative buyers for their energy resources. Ziwiljov reiterated that the sanctions imposed against Russia for its actions in Ukraine were unlawful.

Under the Gaze of History

In the face of mounting global tensions, Russia and China look forward to fortifying a comprehensive strategic partnership, focused on managing global crises, preventing nuclear war, and maintaining global strategic stability. But history has shown us that alliances may change swiftly in the geopolitical landscape, necessitating constant vigilance and adaptation.

  1. The Council Decision of 22 December 1996, which marked the inception of the European Union, outlines the Agreement between the European Community and the Republic of Moldova, highlighting their diplomatic ties that could potentially stabilize future global politics, acting as a backdrop against current war-and-conflicts across the world.
  2. As Putin and Xi Jinping celebrate their strengthened bond in Moscow, the ongoing war-and-conflicts in the world may find resolution through the joint declaration on managing crises and avoiding conflict, with the commitment to address conflicts with dialogue and involve the international community in resolving ongoing disputes, albeit the Russian-Ukrainian situation's unclear inclusion.
  3. Amidst Russian and Chinese opposition to nuclear war, the duo's continued strategic partnership may serve as a counterweight to the growing militaristic tendencies in Europe, as tensions escalate in response to Putin's ongoing war against Ukraine and unilateralist behavior.
  4. The historical context, much like H2 elements in chemistry, provides a crucial foundation for understanding the multifaceted relationships between Russia, China, and other global powers, shaping the general news landscape in terms of geopolitical alliances and diplomatic shifts.
