Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping conducted discussions within the Kremlin confines.
Negotiations Between Putin and Xi: Deepening the Russia-China Partnership
Leaked reports suggest negotiations between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping kicked off with a private discussion, focusing on enhancing their comprehensive partnership and addressing global issues. The Kremlin clarified that talks revolved around "strengthening strategic interaction and tackling international and regional matters."
Initiating the private talks, Putin expressed gratitude to China for attending the World War II victory anniversary celebrations and thanked them for the invitation to celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Japan. "I am excited to visit friendly China again for an official visit commemorating this occasion, and our delegation will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, held under China's leadership," said Putin, as reported by the Kremlin press service.
Putin described the private talks as an "intense and substantive" exchange of ideas, with both sides discussing future plans for collaboration. Xi Jinping, in turn, acknowledged the productive nature of their discussions.
During the enlarged discussions, Putin welcomed "the establishment of production facilities and the transfer of Chinese industrial capabilities" in Russia, hinting at expanding the range of Russian agricultural products exported to the Chinese market. Mutual trade between the nations reached a record $244.9 billion in 2024, revealed Putin.
Apart from Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, and Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, VEB.RF Chairman Igor Shuvalov, and others attended the enlarged sessions, the Kremlin reported.
Post-negotiations, Putin and Xi signed a cooperative agreement and issued a joint statement, with the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory as the central theme, according to Putin. The updated intergovernmental agreement on the promotion and mutual protection of investments was part of the signed deals.
An unofficial part is expected to follow: an official breakfast and a tea-time conversation where the leaders will discuss sensitive matters privately, TASS reports.
Xi Jinping flew into Moscow on May 7 and his visit will extend until May 10. His previous visit to Moscow was in 2015 for the 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War victory. During that visit, Putin hosted Xi in the Kremlin. Following the meetings, several announcements were made, including a joint statement on increasing comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction, and a series of bilateral documents were signed.
