Russian President Putin's stance: Wherever a Russian soldier steps, we follow
Talkin' 'Bout Sumy Again: Putin's Not Ruling It Out
It's Putin, ya know, the dude of Russia, stirring up some trouble once again. This time he's got his sights set on Sumy, a sizeable city in Ukraine's northeast. Putin dropped his thoughts on June 20th during the St. Pete International Economic Forum — in other words, a fancy financial event — as reported by RIA Novosti, the Russian news agency.
During the Q&A, a reporter asked about Russian soldiers treading where they darn well please, and Putin replied with a classic old rule: "Where Russian boots stomp, that's ours."
Putin also brought up Ukraine's chances to chat things out and make nice, but warned 'em it'd only get rougher if they didn't.
When asked about Russia's plan for "security zones" in Sumy's hood, Putin didn't flat-out say he was going all in on capturing Sumy, but he didn't rule it out either, saying, "Imean, it's not our prime mission, but hey, I'm not gonna lie, I'm keeping all my options on the table."
The depth of the "security zones" Putin's talkin' about ranges from 8 to 12 kilometers in the Sumy area. That puts SumyCity, the major urban center, in cautious territory.
Now, what does this mean for Ukraine? As it stands, Sumy's location near Russia's border makes it crucial for controlling northeastern Ukraine and creating a buffer against Ukrainian military action. If Russia does manage to capture Sumy, it could strengthen their grip over eastern and northern Ukrainian territories and impose conditions that limit Ukraine's military capacity and independence. Putin has expressed intentions to do just that in Russia's peace proposals.
Militarily speaking, Russia's got the edge in manpower and equipment, aiming to run roughshod over the Ukrainian forces. The objective seems clear: grain control over northern Ukraine, including Sumy, and seize several oblast capitals, like Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and more, by the end of 2026.
