Putin on Table with Kyiv: Expanding Ceasefire Discussions

Russian President Putin expresses intention for direct talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky.

In a surprising move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled his readiness to engage in direct talks with Ukraine to expand a ceasefire in certain areas. In a response to a proposal from his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, Putin expressed openness to a potential bilateral discussion.

During a meeting in Moscow, Putin responded favorably to Zelensky's proposal to exclude civilian targets from attacks for a 30-day period. "This is a topic that merits careful consideration, perhaps even at the bilateral level," Putin stated. His spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, confirmed that Putin was indeed referring to the possibility of direct talks with Ukraine. Since the failed peace efforts at the onset of the war three years ago, the two sides have not held such talks.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has expressed growing impatience, promising a swift end to the Ukraine conflict. The US government has threatened to abandon its mediation efforts on Good Friday if significant progress is not observed. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made it clear that the US will not invest weeks and months in this undertaking.

Trump made a bold statement earlier, expressing hope that Russia and Ukraine would reach an agreement by the end of the week. He suggested that both countries would subsequently engage in lucrative business with the United States.

Last Saturday, Putin declared a 30-hour ceasefire, but both sides accused each other of violations. The fighting resumed on Easter Monday. US, Ukrainian, British, and French envoys are set to meet in London on Wednesday to discuss new avenues for ending the Russian invasion. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed optimism, stating that they are ready to move forward constructively to achieve a permanent ceasefire followed by a lasting peace.

In a controversial move, Putin justified attacks on civilian objects, citing the strike on Sumy where 35 people, mostly civilians, were reportedly killed. He claimed that the missile strike targeted a gathering of Ukrainian officers who were being honored in the city. Meanwhile, Putin praised the easter ceasefire he declared for Ukraine, stating that there has been a reduction in enemy combat activities. However, he accused Ukraine of violating the ceasefire almost 5000 times.

Despite Putin’s desire for a peaceful resolution, he has reiterated Russia's willingness for a prolonged conflict if necessary, referencing historical precedents. Putin also questioned Zelensky's legitimacy as a negotiator and implied that Moscow may seek assurances about the political status of Ukrainian leadership before committing to a final settlement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's openness to resuming and expanding direct talks with Ukraine signals a potential turning point in the long-running conflict. While there are significant political and military conditions to be resolved, both sides have yet to agree on a ceasefire or final peace deal. Negotiations are expected to restart after June 22, 2025, with the potential for high-level meetings. However, fundamental disagreements over legitimacy, security guarantees, and military actions persist, and it remains uncertain if the upcoming talks will lead to a productive outcome.
