Rough and Rowdy: Latvia's State Security Service Slaps Criminal Charges

Get this scoop, y'all! Latvia's State Security Service (SSS) has set its sights on former Saeima deputy Alexei Roslikov, who recently scored a seat on Riga's City Council. The SSS burst onto the scene on June 9, accusing Roslikov of assisting Russia in its actions against Latvia and stirring up hatred among the people.

After assessing Roslikov's actions during a parliamentary session on June 5, and a series of recent endeavors, the SSS decided it had enough evidence to open a criminal case against the opposition leader. Reportedly, they had warned Roslikov previously about his actions and the potential criminal consequences.

Roslikov allegedly violated Section 81, Part 1 and Section 78 of the Criminal Law, with the most severe penalty being a maximum of 20 years in prison for helping a foreign state act against Latvia. During the parliamentary debate about a draft decision aimed at combating the linguistic effects of Russification, Roslikov shouted an inflammatory statement in Russian, asserting "We are more, our language is Russian!" after objecting to the proposal.

Following his outburst, Roslikov expressed no remorse, stating it was a response to the suppression of his native tongue, Russian. The State Language Center then kicked off an administrative offense process regarding Roslikov's actions, while the State Police tackled a barrage of complaints from fellow Saeima deputies regarding Roslikov's behavior. However, due to losing his Saeima deputy mandate upon being elected to the Riga City Council, he can no longer face penalties for any potential ethics violation.

So, there you have it! The Latvian authorities are cracking down on Alexei Roslikov, accusing him of aiding Russia in its activities against Latvia and fueling ethnic tensions. Stay tuned for more updates, folks!
