Controversial Visit of Russian Delegation to Geneva Sparks Protests and Calls for Accountability

A delegation led by Valentina Matviyenko, the president of Russia's upper house, is currently in Geneva for a multi-day meeting of parliamentarians. However, the visit has been met with significant controversy and condemnation.

Matviyenko, a close ally of Vladimir Putin, is accompanied by other sanctioned Russian politicians such as Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Duma's Foreign Affairs Committee, and Pyotr Tolstoy, Deputy Duma Chairman. These individuals are under Western sanctions due to their support for Russia's war against Ukraine.

The visit has sparked protests and calls for a criminal investigation from various groups. Approximately 200 Russian opposition figures sent an open letter to the Swiss government demanding an investigation into the presence of these Russian officials in Switzerland, criticizing their involvement at the conference given their roles in the Putin regime and the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian and European delegations staged a walkout during Matviyenko's speech in protest, as she defended Russia’s military aggression in Ukraine and propagated Russian narratives justifying the invasion. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry condemned her presence, stating she belongs in The Hague rather than at international conferences due to her involvement in aggression against Ukraine.

While there are calls for legal investigations into Matviyenko, Tolstoy, and Slutsky related to their support of the Putin regime’s war, no concrete legal proceedings have been initiated by Switzerland or other countries tied directly to this visit as of the current date. Switzerland allowed their entry by temporarily lifting sanctions to fulfill its obligations for participation in events held under international organizations' auspices.

Nonetheless, the Ukrainian government and various opposition groups are actively working toward potential legal actions and highlighting their responsibility for actions tied to the conflict. The critics hold the three members directly responsible for the war against Ukraine, the destruction of democratic institutions, and the comprehensive repression within Russia.

In summary, Matviyenko's and other sanctioned Russian officials' visit to Geneva was highly controversial, marked by protests and calls for legal accountability, but so far no direct legal actions have been taken specifically against them in connection with this visit.

  1. The Commission, in the context of the European Environment Agency, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a regulation on the protection of the environment, given the ongoing political disputes and general news coverage surrounding Matviyenko's controversial visit with other sanctioned Russian officials to Geneva.
  2. As the controversy surrounding Matviyenko's visit amidst the ongoing war-and-conflicts between Russia and Ukraine continues to unfold, it raises imagery of tense political climate not only on the battlefield but also in international forums, with calls for accountability echoing beyond the battle cries.
