In the midst of preparations for a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, a significant event unfolded in Russia. A drone attack on the Syzran oil refinery in the Samara region caused fires, explosions, and temporary shutdown of the facility.

The Syzran refinery, one of the largest in the Rosneft system, is critical for supplying fuel to multiple Russian regions, supporting military units, and local industries. The attack has disrupted the fuel supply, potentially causing regional shortages and impairing Russian military logistics, particularly for airfields and ground units in the Central and Southern Military Districts.

This is not the first time the Syzran refinery has been targeted. Previous drone strikes on the facility occurred in 2024, illustrating a sustained Ukrainian effort to degrade Russia’s energy and military infrastructure. The attack also marks part of a broader Ukrainian campaign to target Russian infrastructure inside Russia, aiming to disrupt Moscow’s military efforts in the ongoing war.

The destruction of fuel and military supply infrastructure within Russia by Ukrainian forces has significant practical and symbolic consequences. It harms Moscow’s operational capacity and morale, and Ukraine is intensifying its drone strike capabilities to disrupt Russian military supply chains directly on Russian territory.

Germans, meanwhile, have low expectations for the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to a poll by the ZDF "Politbarometer", only 14% of Germans believe Putin has a genuine interest in a lasting ceasefire, while 82% do not. Similarly, only 13% of Germans believe Trump can mediate enough to achieve a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine at the Alaska meeting on Friday, while 84% doubt such an outcome.

As leaders gear up for their meeting, protests against the planned encounter are taking place in Anchorage, Alaska. Hundreds of people have gathered to voice their opposition to the meeting.

Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine has received $1.5 billion from European allies for the purchase of US weapons, with Germany contributing $500 million. This move comes as Ukrainian forces have been ordering the evacuation of frontline settlements due to the advance of Russian troops in eastern Ukraine.

The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will take place at 11:00 local time (21:00 CEST) in Anchorage, Alaska. The impact of the drone attack on the Syzran refinery and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine will undoubtedly be topics of discussion during this highly anticipated encounter.
