Russian military leader sustains grave injury during conflict in Ukraine

In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Lieutenant General Esedulla Abatschew, Deputy Commander of the Leningrad Military District, has reportedly been injured. The incident occurred on March 18, 2022, during a convoy ambush near Hostomel, a town northwest of Kyiv.

According to open sources, Ukrainian forces used anti-tank weapons during the fighting, resulting in the severe injury of Lieutenant General Abatschew. He was evacuated to one of Russia's best military hospitals for treatment, including neurosurgical intervention and rehabilitation.

However, the exact nature and current status of his injuries have not been officially confirmed, with most information coming from unofficial sources and military leaks.

Lieutenant General Abatschew, originally from Dagestan, has been at the forefront of the conflict since its early days. He has held several key command positions, as stated by Sergei Melikov, head of Russia's Dagestan Republic.

The Leningrad Military District, where Lieutenant General Abatschew served, extends beyond the city of Leningrad or St. Petersburg, encompassing all regions of northwestern Russia up to the Ural Mountains. Established in 2024 under Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, the Leningrad Military District is a military district, not a political or administrative district.

It's not only Lieutenant General Abatschew who has been harmed in the conflict. At least twelve high-ranking Russian officers have been confirmed dead, with the death of other high-ranking officers also reported.

Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR claimed responsibility for the injury of Lieutenant General Abatschew, stating that several limbs had to be amputated following the strike against a military column in the western Russian region of Kursk. However, these claims have not been officially confirmed by Russian authorities.

  1. Amidst the general-news headlines and political discussions surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Lieutenant General Abatschew's injury, while serving at the Leningrad Military District, has been a significant deterrent in the ongoing hostilities.
  2. Parallel to the military engagements, the politics surrounding the Russia-Ukraine conflict have been heated, with Ukrainian sources claiming responsibility for the injury of Lieutenant General Abatschew, a key Russian commanding officer, during a convoy ambush in Hostomel.
