Russian military jetsPatrolling above Polish offshore oil facility
In a recent incident, Russian MiG-31 fighter jets were intercepted by Italian Air Force jets in the Baltic Sea. The Polish border guard had earlier announced a violation of the security zone above a platform owned by the Polish concern Orlen Petrobaltic.
The oil platform, located approximately 70 km north of Jastarnia and within the Polish economic zone of the Baltic Sea, was the site of the security zone violation. Three Russian fighter jets were reported to have entered Estonian airspace without permission.
The incident did not involve a violation of any state borders. The Russian aircraft flew over the Petrobaltic drilling platform at an altitude of 150 meters, remaining in the airspace for 12 minutes.
NATO responded immediately to the violation, but no further information was provided regarding any response or actions taken by the Polish or Russian authorities. Similarly, no details were available about the individual commanders of the Russian combat aircraft involved in the incident.
The platform is situated near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo. Estonia also reported a violation of its airspace by Russia, but the specifics of this violation are not clear.
Despite the incident, normal operations resumed at the Petrobaltic drilling platform shortly after the Russian aircraft departed the area. The Polish armed forces and other services were notified about the incident.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the region. Tensions between NATO and Russia have been high, and incidents like these serve as reminders of the need for vigilance and cooperation among the alliance members. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely.
