Russian military jets patrolling over an oil platform in Polish territory
In an incident that has raised new tensions at the NATO border, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonia's airspace without permission, according to reports from dpa, a German press agency.
The incident, which occurred on a specific date (X), did not involve a violation of Poland's national borders. However, the Polish border guard reported a violation of the security zone above the drilling platform Petrobaltic in the Baltic Sea. Two Russian fighter jets flew in low altitude over the platform, at approximately 150 meters, according to the Polish border guard.
The platform, owned by Orlen Petrobaltic, is located in the Polish economic zone of the Baltic Sea, approximately 70 km north of Jastarnia and near the Russia borders in the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo.
NATO responded to the incident with Italian fighter jets intercepting the Russian aircraft. The Russian aircraft stayed in the airspace for a total of 12 minutes.
The Polish Ministry of the Interior confirmed the incident in a written statement, with Warsaw notifying the armed forces and publicly condemning the provocative act amid heightened regional tensions.
Estonia also reported a violation of its airspace by Russia in a separate incident. The exact reaction of Warsaw to this incident is not specified in the article.
This incident marks another instance of increased tensions between Russia and its neighbours in the region, underscoring the importance of NATO's role in maintaining peace and security in the area. The source of the information about the incident near the Polish drilling platform is TVN24, a Polish news channel.
