Russian military aircraft hovering above Polish offshore oil facility
In an unusual incident on September 19, 2025, three MiG-31 combat aircraft from Russia approached a Polish drilling rig in the Baltic Sea at low altitude, causing concern among the Polish authorities. The Polish drilling platform, owned by the Polish concern Orlen Petrobaltic, is located in the Polish economic zone of the Baltic Sea, approximately 70 km north of Jastarnia.
Contrary to initial reports, the incident did not occur on the Petrobaltic drilling platform itself, but rather in its vicinity. The security zone above the platform was violated, according to the border guard, but there was no violation of the state border.
The Polish armed forces and other services were promptly notified about the incident. NATO immediately reacted, with the Italian air force intercepting the Russian aircraft. The pilots of the Russian fighter jets involved in the incident have not been publicly identified.
The violation occurred near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo. Interestingly, Estonia reported a separate violation of its airspace by Russia, with the Russian aircraft staying in Estonia's airspace for a total of 12 minutes.
Despite the incident, it is important to note that this did not involve any Polish, Russian, or NATO combat aircraft in the Polish economic zone of the Baltic Sea. The Polish border guard wrote about the incident on a specified date, assuring that there was no breach of the state border.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of international airspace regulations and the need for open communication and cooperation between nations to ensure safety and security in shared territories.
