Russian leader Putin expresses readiness for a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky
In the recent international political landscape, the prospect of a trilateral summit between the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and the United States has been a topic of interest. However, as of late August 2025, no such meeting has been officially confirmed.
The US President, Donald Trump, has expressed his intentions to arrange a summit involving Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, and Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine. Trump met separately with both leaders in August 2025, with Putin in Alaska and Zelensky in Washington, D.C., as part of his peace efforts. Yet, a specific date and location for the trilateral summit have not been finalized.
Trump's hope for the meeting is that it could take place "fast," possibly as early as late August 2025, but this is contingent on agreement from both Putin and Zelensky, which has not yet materialized.
Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, have indicated that the agenda for a meeting between Putin and Zelensky is "not ready at all." Putin has not publicly committed to such a meeting, and reports suggest that he avoids meeting Zelensky personally due to personal dislike, according to Trump.
Despite the lack of progress in arranging a direct summit between Putin and Zelensky, Trump and Putin have expressed support for direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations. This support was conveyed by Yuri Ushakov, Putin's assistant, who stated that both leaders back such dialogues.
In a recent development, Trump announced that he has started preparing for a meeting with Putin and Zelensky. This announcement followed a phone call between Trump and Putin, which took place after the US President's meeting with Zelensky and European leaders. The phone call was reported by AFP.
Earlier this year, Trump appointed representatives for coordination with Russia and Ukraine, indicating his commitment to resolving the ongoing issues between the two nations.
In summary, while Trump has pushed for a trilateral summit, he has not secured Putin’s agreement or set a date/location. Putin and Zelensky have not agreed to meet directly at this time, and the prospect remains uncertain, with no confirmed plans as of late August 2025.
