Russian Governor confirms death of 17 individuals following attack on a prison in Russia

In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, nighttime attacks have escalated this year, with hundreds of aircraft involved in these operations. The latest incident occurred on the outskirts of the frontline city of Saporishzhia in southern Ukraine, where a prison was targeted.

The affected prison, located in the village of Bilenke on the banks of the Dnipro River, has been a hotspot of tension due to its proximity to Russian and Ukrainian troops' positions. The attack on the prison in Saporishzhia has raised questions on social networks as to why the inmates of the correctional facility were not evacuated from the front line.

According to military governor Ivan Fedorov, the attack occurred overnight, with eight instances of air attacks from the Russian side, presumably with glide bombs. These Soviet-era aerial bombs, retrofitted with guidance systems and fins, carry large explosive payloads and are dropped by Russian fighter jets from areas under Russian control near the front line.

The attack was described as deliberate and targeted civilians, including prisoners, who are protected under international law, indicating the attack was not accidental but an intentional strike on a civilian object. At least 17 inmates were killed and 42 injured in the attack, as reported by Ukrainian authorities.

Inmates were not evacuated likely due to the prison's proximity to an active frontline zone and the suddenness or intentionality of the strike. The rapid or intense nature of the assault may have prevented such action.

Defense against glide bombs is limited mainly to advanced air defenses that can intercept incoming aerial threats like missiles and drones. However, glide bombs pose a special challenge due to their guidance and payload, causing heavy damage when they get through. Ukraine attempted to intercept many strike drones and missiles, but glide bombs have caused significant structural damage to facilities like the prison and residential areas.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is attempting to hit military and industrial targets deep behind Russian lines with combat drones. Despite the destructive power of Russian weapons, the combat drones used by Ukraine have less power compared to their Russian counterparts.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and the devastating impact it continues to have on civilian populations. The international community is urged to take action to bring an end to this conflict and protect civilians from further harm.
