Russian footballer expresses regret for participating in Ukraine games
Moscow-based footballer, Philipp Budkovskiy, voiced remorse over his stint with Makhachkala's "Anji," as reported by Sport24 from a YouTube video. He stated, "I wish I hadn't done that. I'd like to forget this entire period, just wipe it clean."
Budkovskiy played for "Anji" during the 2016/17 season and the early months of 2018, but now plays for Ukrainian side "Zarya."
In February 2022, due to the suspensions imposed by FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) and UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), the Russian national team and Russian clubs were barred from participating in competitions governed by these associations. As a result, teams were prevented from competing in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, while the men's national team missed the chance to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Moreover, Russian footballers were also excluded from the 2024 European Championship and were not included in the draw for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Previously, a former player of the Ukrainian national team called for understanding towards Yaroslav Rakitskiy for playing for St. Petersburg's "Zenit."
While specific reasons for Budkovskiy's regret aren't clear, it's plausible that the financial instability, consistent relegations, and overall difficulties faced by Anji Makhachkala could have contributed to his sentiment. The impact of international sanctions, such as missed international competitions and reduced sponsorship opportunities, are common challenges faced by Russian football teams and players, which may have played a role in Budkovskiy's regret.
Budkovskiy might have regretted his time at Anji Makhachkala, considering they were barred from European-leagues due to FIFA and UEFA sanctions, affecting teams' participation in the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, and qualification for international tournaments like the World Cup and European Championship. His remorse could also be linked to the financial instability and relegations Anji faced, common challenges in Russian football clubs during such periods.
