The city of Chelyabinsk is set to host the 17th International Drama Theater Festival "Kamernaya" from October 3rd to 8th. This significant cultural event promises a week of captivating performances, as theater groups from across Russia and beyond gather to showcase their contemporary drama productions.

Festival Overview

The festival, focusing on chamber theater productions, will take place at various venues, including the Kamerny Theater, the Youth Theater, and the Naum Orlov Drama Theater. Over the course of the festival, the panel of experts, led by Moscow-based theater scholar and critic, Ekaterina Morozova, will evaluate the theatrical works. The experts will select the best in eight categories and determine the recipient of the grand prize, the "Camera" award.

Participating Theater Groups

A diverse selection of plays from Russian and international theater companies will be presented during the festival. The participating theaters typically include notable drama theaters from Russia and abroad, such as Moscow theaters specializing in contemporary drama, theater companies from neighboring countries showcasing new dramaturgy, and experimental and independent theater groups emphasizing chamber production formats.

For the 17th edition, attendees can expect a curated selection of approximately 6 to 8 plays, each representing different cultural and stylistic approaches to drama. Theater groups from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ufa, Khanty-Mansiysk, Kurgan, Kazakhstan, and Abkhazia are participating in the festival.

Highlights of the Festival

Two plays of particular note are "It's Good to Live", a Kurgan Drama Theater production inspired by Nekrasov's poem, and "My Poor Marat", a classic Soviet drama brought by the Ufa Russian Drama Theater. The festival will present a total of 11 plays to the audience.
