Russian fighter jets breach Estonian airspace
Breaking News: Fourth Airspace Violation by Russia over Estonia in 2021
In a concerning development, Estonia has reported yet another violation of its airspace by Russian fighter jets. This time, three Russian MiG-31 jets were involved in the incident, which took place over the Baltic Sea on Friday.
The violation, unprecedentedly brazen, lasted for 12 minutes. This marks the fourth such incident in 2021, raising concerns about Russia's increasing border crossings and growing aggression.
The Estonian Foreign Minister, Margus Tsahkna, has strongly condemned the violation, stating that it is unacceptable. He also emphasised that Russia's actions require a swift increase in political and economic pressure.
In response to the violation, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian Ambassador to Estonia on Friday. The purpose of the meeting was to deliver a note regarding the breach of Estonian airspace.
It is worth noting that the German Armed Forces have been participating in the "Air Policing Baltikum" (APB) mission from Ämari Air Base in Estonia since 2014. The German Air Force is one of the key contributors to this project.
Estonia, which was part of the Soviet Union until 1990, became a NATO member in 2004. The country has been working closely with its NATO allies to ensure the security of its airspace.
In a statement, Tsahkna also expressed his concern about the repeated violations, stating that they pose a threat to regional stability and security. He urged Russia to respect Estonia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The German government has not yet issued a formal response to the incident. However, it is expected that they will continue to work closely with their NATO allies to address this issue and maintain peace and security in the region.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation and adherence to international law. It is hoped that such incidents will cease in the future, and that Russia will respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbours.
