Russian fighter jets allegedly breached Estonia's airspace in a presumed bold intrusion.

Three Russian military aircraft encroached upon Estonia's airspace on a Friday, an action which Estonia deemed "extraordinarily audacious," and seems to represent the most recent attempt by the Kremlin to challenge NATO's defenses.

The United Nations Security Council failed to lift Iran's 'snapback' sanctions ahead of the deadline, as global tensions continue to escalate. Meanwhile, a series of incidents involving Russia have raised concerns among its neighbours and NATO allies.

On Friday, Estonia experienced an unprecedented violation of its airspace by three Russian fighter jets, marking the fifth time this year that Russia has breached Estonian airspace. The MiG-31 fighter aircraft entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland without permission and remained for 12 minutes, according to the Estonian Ministry of Defense.

The incursion was intercepted by NATO aircraft, as confirmed by NATO spokesperson Allison Hart. Kaja Kallas, the European Union's foreign policy chief, described the incident as an extremely dangerous provocation, while President Donald Trump called it "big trouble."

Estonia's government has protested to the top Russian diplomat in the country following the incursion. The European Union stands in full solidarity with Estonia, with Kallas stating that such actions are unacceptable and pose a threat to the security of the entire region.

Nations like Estonia, which was part of the Russian empire and then annexed by the Soviet Union until it fell in 1991, have been on high alert since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. Some European countries have warned that NATO needs to fortify its defenses to counter Russian President Vladimir Putin's ambitions.

Poland, another NATO ally, reported a week ago that a number of Russian drones had entered its airspace during an attack on Ukraine, prompting NATO to send fighter jets to shoot them down. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the current situation brings them the closest they have been to open conflict since World War II.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is planning to meet Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the United Nations General Assembly next week. However, no specific announcements or new decisions by Lavrov at the UN session have been detailed in the available sources as of September 2025.

In a separate incident, Russian drones were shot down over Poland. The Trump administration proposed selling nearly $6 billion in weapons to Israel, as tensions in the Middle East continue to simmer.

As the world watches, the situation remains tense, with nations on edge and the potential for conflict looming large. The United Nations and NATO will likely play key roles in mediating and addressing these escalating tensions.
