Russian efforts detected by British intelligence to encircle Pokrovsk, aiming to disrupt the supply lines of Ukraine's military forces.

In the heart of Ukraine's Donetsk region, the city of Pokrovsk remains a critical strategic objective for both Ukrainian and Russian forces. The city, a key logistical hub supporting operations in Donbas, has been under intense scrutiny since February 2024, following the capture of Avdiivka by Russian forces.

According to a report published by "European Truth" on 22 July, military personnel working in Pokrovsk confirmed the fact of Russian penetration into the city to "Ukrainian Truth". This information was later corroborated by the UK Ministry of Defence Intelligence Briefing of 2 August.

Russian Ground Forces have been intensifying efforts to encircle Pokrovsk, with gradual gains northeast of the city over the past week. The main northern supply route of Pokrovsk passes through Rodynske, and Russian forces have advanced westward in this area, particularly towards Rodynske.

Notably, Russian tactics in Pokrovsk mirror those used in Ugledar and Avdiivka, with infiltration teams disguised as civilians and the use of drones to mine Ukrainian ground lines of communication. This has complicated Ukrainian defense efforts and raised concerns of potential war crimes under the Geneva Convention.

However, Ukrainian forces have not been deterred. Following the infiltration, a cleanup operation was conducted, and recent advances have been reported in related sectors such as Novopavlivka. The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrskiy, reported the destruction of Russian saboteurs attempting to break through to Pokrovsk on 21 July.

The battle for Pokrovsk remains undecided but critical, characterized by intense exchanges, significant Russian attempts at encirclement, and persistent Ukrainian resistance and counteroffensives. Russian forces have seized territory south of Highway H-32, advancing in the area of Mirnolyubivka, potentially threatening the logistical routes of Pokrovsk further.

Estonian intelligence has been observing the situation in Pokrovsk, noting that Russian forces are experiencing significant losses in manpower and equipment due to their efforts against the fortified city. The British analysts have also noted these advancements in their recent intelligence briefing.

As of early August 2025, the battle for Pokrovsk continues, with no decisive victory for either side. The resilience of Ukrainian forces in the face of Russian aggression serves as a testament to their determination to protect their territory.
