Polish airspace faced an unprecedented violation on Wednesday night, as a large number of drones infiltrated its airspace, along with NATO territory, during a Russian air strike on Ukraine. This incident, the first of its kind, has raised concerns about the potential escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

Brandenburg's Minister President, Dietmar Woidke, who served as the German government's Poland commissioner from 2014 to 2022, has expressed his concern over the incident. Woidke, who most recently held the position until 2022, considered the drone infiltration as an escalation level that he didn't anticipate.

In the context of his previous role, Woidke emphasized the importance of resolving the conflict in Ukraine diplomatically as soon as possible. He also underscored that the drone infiltration incident underscores the importance of his previous call for a diplomatic resolution.

Woidke expressed hope that all parties find an appropriate response to the drone infiltration. However, he did not specify the nature of the response he hopes for. The Polish government has taken necessary steps in response to the incident, although the specifics of these steps are not detailed.

Poland has restricted air traffic along its eastern border in response to the drone incursion. Some of the infiltrating drones were shot down by the Polish air force and other NATO allies in Poland.

The close political, economic, and cultural ties between Brandenburg and Poland remain unchanged, according to Woidke. He did not indicate any change in his stance on these ties despite the recent events.

The infiltration of drones into Polish airspace is a cause for concern for Woidke. He believes that the incident reinforces his call for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Woidke hopes for a swift and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the need for diplomacy to prevent further escalations.
