Russian cruiser sinking: Reports suggest that the United States provided intelligence that supported Ukraine in sinking a Russian vessel, named Moskva.
In a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the United States played a crucial role in helping Ukraine sink the Russian Black Sea missile cruiser Moskva.
According to a representative from the Pentagon, the US provided knowledge to help Ukraine defend itself, which ultimately led to the successful targeting and sinking of the Moskva. The 510-crew projectile cruiser had led Russia's marine attack on Ukraine, making its sinking a major symbolic and military blow.
The sinking of the Moskva involved the use of Neptune missiles by Ukraine, which were domestically produced but supported by Western assistance, including from the US. The US assistance included sharing critical intelligence information, supporting the use of American-origin technology such as Starlink for communication and targeting, and contributing to the development and deployment of innovative drone boats used by Ukraine in naval warfare around Crimea. These drone boats, using American designs and connectivity, were key in damaging Russian vessels and enhancing Ukraine’s maritime capabilities.
However, it's important to note that the Pentagon has not commented directly on the reports regarding the Moskva. Unnamed US officials have claimed that they did not know that Ukraine would target the Moskva after helping determine its location.
In a separate development, the US has denied media reports that it was providing information regarding the locations of elderly Russian generals on the battlefield, so that Ukrainian forces could kill them.
Ukraine had asked the US about a ship cruising to the south of Odesa, which was identified as the Moskva. The US claimed it verified the location of the Moskva for Ukraine.
The Russian defense ministry initially claimed that ammunition aboard the Moskva blew up in an unusual fire, and the ship tipped over while being pulled back to port. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the sinking of the Moskva are still under investigation.
In addition to this assistance, the US has also approved transfers of advanced missile systems like the Extended Range Attack Munitions (ERAM) that expand Ukraine’s strike capabilities, although these arrived after the Moskva sinking.
This naval success against Russia’s flagship cruiser in 2022 was made possible by the collective efforts of intelligence, targeting, communication support, and provision of weapon technologies from the US and other Western allies, enabling Ukraine to defend its territory effectively.
