Russian Couple Names Daughter 'Kosmos' After TV Character's Bold Influence
A Russian couple has named their daughter Kosmos, drawing inspiration from a TV character. Tatiana and Alexei chose the unusual girl name despite initial concerns about how it would be received. The decision has sparked mixed reactions from friends and family alike.
The idea came after Tatiana and Alexei binged a family TV show featuring a character named Kosmos. They initially hesitated, fearing the church might reject the unconventional choice. However, during the registration process, a mix of chaos and the name's symbolic weight led to it being officially recorded on the baby's birth certificate.
For Kosmos' first birthday, Tatiana decorated her daughter's cake with a fondant astronaut and planets, embracing the cosmic theme. The couple also playfully calls their daughter Kosmonavtik, a nod to the Russian word for 'cosmonaut'. When it came time for the baptism, the priest christened her Kosma—a traditional Russian variant of the name.
The name Kosmos also appears in the 1990s Russian crime series Brigada, where a father gives his daughter the same name, believing its rarity will bring success. Tatiana shares this belief, convinced that an uncommon girl name will set her daughter apart in life.
Kosmos now has two versions of her name—one on her birth certificate and another from her baptism. The couple remains unfazed by the mixed reactions, confident in their choice. The name, while rare, has become a defining part of their daughter's identity.
